Randy Whetstone, Director

Turning Ideas
into
Working Reality
for
Grant, Hardy & Pendleton Counties

Located in Petersburg, WV, our school has served Grant, Hardy and Pendleton Counties since 1969. Over the years, our student-centered programs have challenged individuals through rigorous academic,  vocational and technical training. Our goal has been, and remains, to open doors of opportunity for all of our graduates, allowing them to have flexible career choices and access to a college education.

In addition to meeting and maintaining high standards in core content areas, all students are required to demonstrate basic computer skills for on-line End of Course test taking, ACT Key Train preparation and internet use.

A variety of programs have been tailored to meet the individual needs of our adult population.   For those without a high school diploma, we offer studies in Adult Basic Education at both our Petersburg and Moorefield branches.  The GED test is offered  at the Petersburg branch.

We are sensitive to students' individual learning styles and needs. Recently, we constructed a state-of-the-art computer-based learning lab to offer a wide range of academic assistance.

We look forward to serving you.

1.   Summer Classes

Summer Classes are being offered in our Business Programs. For information please contact the school or watch for announcements in your local newspaper.

2.  Directors Conference:

Mr. Whetstone and Mr. Watts just returned from the directors conference in Flatwoods, WV.

3.  West Virginia Job Service Workforce:

Seniors at SBCTC will be given the opportunity to make applications with Workforce on Friday May 16th.  This provides a opportunity for the Seniors to link up with potential employers.

4. A Note to Parents from Mr. Whetstone About End-of-Course Tests:

      End-of-Course test results are important.

Each test consists of 50-multiple choice questions that your child answers on-line; results are immediately available to both the students and the instructor.

The results provide a measure of the extent that our students have mastered technical skills in each concentration area. That information is included in West Virginia's accountability report to the U. S. Department of Education. For us here at South Branch, the data provides our staff with information vital to the task of improving the quality of instruction for your child.

Testing at South Branch begins on Thursday May, 1  and continues through Friday, May 23. Please check the calendar on the link above for specific class testing schedules.

"No Child Left Behind" requires us to use the same assessment to measure the achievement of all students; however, if your child has an identified disability listed on an IEP or 504 Plan that lists accommodations, I encourage you to emphasize to your child the importance of following those accommodations. If you have any questions, please call.

In general, tests may be read VERBATIM - word-for-word.  Any exception is not permitted. Calculators on the computer may be used; timing is flexible.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please give me a call.

5.  Crisis Plan Review:

The Crisis plan is on file at SBCTC. In case of a need to evacuate our campus, we have two options: Petersburg High School tennis courts or Petersburg High School football field bleachers.

This is part of our on-going effort to ensure a safe school environment. Parents and community members are urged to contact Mr. Whetstone with ideas and comments.

6.  Pell Grants:

The first drawdown of Pell Grant funds was completed during the week of January 7, 2008; the second and final drawdown of funds is scheduled for February, 2008.  Mr. Watts and Mrs. Harman work with recording and verifying contact hours.
